STUDENTS of the Open University from West Devon and East Cornwall are celebrating after gaining their degrees and diplomas.

Jennie Cook, 56, of Albaston, who is a typesetter, gained a BSC (Hons) Natural Sciences. Both her daughters attained degrees so she decided that, with their help and encouragement, it was her turn.

?Had I had the opportunity to go to university when I was a teenager, that?s what I would have done,? Jennie said. When it was suggested that ?mum had a go as well?, she decided to do her favourite subject ? biology.

?It was difficult as I work full time. I had to be a bit ruthless with my time; it focuses the mind splendidly?, she said.

?If I went away I had to take my books with me. But now I?ve got my life back!?

Jennie said the feeling on hearing she had obtained the degree was ?indescribable?: ?I?ve proved I can do it!?

Morna Boulbin, 35, of Callington obtained a Dip HE (SW). She said gaining a professional qualification enabled her to develop within the organisation she worked for and gain employment as a middle manager.

She is now a domiciliary care manager.

Milton Abbot resident Lynne Hatwell, 49, a health visitor, has worked for the NHS and decided she wanted to study a totally unrelated subject.

As a result, she now boasts a BA (Honours) Literature to her name.

Brian Cottrell, 57, of Tavistock, an engineering manager, was successful in obtaining a BSc (Honours) Mathematical Studies and Celina Cox, also of Tavistock, obtained a BSc (Honours) Psychology.

Miss Cox is a teacher in Plymouth.
