X-FACTOR singing star Rowetta will make a Tavistock family?s day when she performs at their home to promote a charity which helps autistic children. The performer will be singing in Paul Lewis? playroom which was built with funding from the community. Rowetta is involved with the Caudwell Charity which helps families with autistic children. The Lewis family received a grant from the charity to fund a place on the specialist Son-Rise training programme. Paul, four, was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder in December 2003 and has responded extremely well to this intensive programme, which was developed in America. His father, Allen, who is a fan of the X-Factor show, was impressed by Rowetta when she appeared on the original series and has been corresponding with her via her website: ?I told her I thought she had a fantastic voice and she responded to my e-mail,? he said. ?I told her about Paul and e-mailed some pictures of our family and then I found out she was involved with the Caudwell charity. ?She said she wanted to come and sing and promote the charity and see how Son-Rise is helping Paul.? It is hoped that one of Son-Rise?s specialist facilitators Beth Archer, who spent a day working with Paul recently, will return to the playroom for the event. The distraction-free playroom is built along the same lines as those in America where the principles and techniques of Son-Rise are implemented with a group of volunteers. The programme uses dynamic, enthusiastic play-orientated methods which focus on socialisation and rapport building. A date has not yet been fixed with the singer but it is expected to be in early December. Mr Allen hopes other children with autism will also be able to come along. Rowetta said she was delighted to be coming to Tavistock to sing for Paul. ?He?s a gorgeous child,? she said. ?Alan said he was a fan of mine, he talked about Son-Rise and I just thought ?Oh wow?. ?Paul has just spoken his first words, which is great, and apparently he can say my name now, which is just amazing.? Rowetta said she had not decided what she would sing for Paul yet ? but she hopes to make the trip to Tavistock within the next few weeks. ?We want to do it before Christmas ? hopefully the first week in December,? she said. l Rowetta will be starring in the Children In Need television programme tomorrow (Friday).
