KELLY Choral Society came together recently in Tavistock Parish church to present a mighty work — the Brahms Requiem. Under their conductor Andrew Wilson, and with Mary Mazur-Park at the organ, they approached this wide-ranging work with enthusiasm and dedication. Of the seven movements, four are chorus only, giving the whole choir a real challenge. If the performance faltered once or twice, this was nonetheless a worthy performance by a strong and talented choir. The opening of the first movement after the interval, 'How lovely are thy dwellings' was given a fine interpretation. They were joined by baritone John Draisey, who gave a particularly fine rendering of 'Lord, Let me know mine end'. Caren Friel, who joined them for the soprano solo 'Ye now have sorrow', also gave a stunning performance of two arias at the beginning of the programme, by Vivaldi and Handel. This was a strong performance of a difficult and challenging work. FELICITY BARNABY
