POLICE in Tavistock this week warned West Devon dog walkers to keep their pets under proper control while out and about on Dartmoor. Farmers in the area are about to release sheep back onto the moor, following a period of treatment during which they have been penned. A police spokesman said: ?Officers have historically received a number of reports from sheep farmers, that their livestock have been attacked by dogs, causing great distress and even death to the vulnerable ewes and their lambs.? Police have been informed of incidents at Yelverton, Clearbrook and Cadover Bridge where farmers have suffered the loss of their animals. The spokesman said: ?Dog walkers should be aware of their responsibilities under legislation when walking dogs in a public area and could face prosecution if this is not adhered to. ?Police are keen to stress that designated areas of the moor are there for the enjoyment of all, and that by following the principles of the countryside code incidents of this kind can be eradicated.? Police say farmers are within their rights to shoot dogs which they catch worrying sheep. A meeting was due to take place between Dartmoor Commoners? Council representatives and police today (Thursday), to discuss the legal position of farmers and action which may be taken during sheep worrying incidents.
