A DOG who was trapped down a gully for almost a month and survived has received cards and letters from well-wishers from all over the world. One American resident even sent £10 to go towards fencing off the gully where 12-year-old collie Holly fell down in a middle-of-the-night thunder storm. Holly, who lives with her owners Dennis and Irene Stephenson from Stoke Climsland, lost half her body weight during her ordeal and survived on drips of water falling off a roof. She was found stuck down the 10ft ditch between Stoke Climsland churchyard and the village social club by secretary of the parochial church council William Somerville in July when she was just days away from certain death. The 18ins gully has been there for half a century without incident but since Holly?s fall, which attracted national publicity, the church council has agreed to fence it off to prevent anything like it ever happening again. Mr Stephenson said it was good news that approval had been given for the erection of the fence and he was touched by the concerns of other dog lovers. ?It is really good that people have taken the time to write to us ? they have been concerned by what Holly has been through,? he said. ?She is fine now. She still has a bit of weight to put back on but the vets have given her a clean bill of health. She is back to normal in terms of her general well being.? Mr Somerville said the 3ft metal fence would be installed during the autumn and would cost in the region of £400. He confirmed that the £10 sent from America had gone into the fence fund: ?Any contributions are gratefully received,? he said.
