SPECIAL subsidised workshops aimed at helping small businesses cope with their tax affairs are being offered in West Devon, following the success of a similar event held earlier this summer.

The local enterprise agency, West Devon Business Information Point (BIP), says when businesses fail within the first three years of trading, it can often be due to insufficient funds to pay the Inland Revenue.

BIP says it is important to maintain business records so that funds are accumulated to cope with tax demands and it ran a successful workshop covering these issues in June.

A spokesman for West Devon BIP said the feedback from the workshop was ?tremendous?, with some organisations realising they were not claiming enough against their businesses, while others estimated they could save £1,200 in professional fees by using knowledge gained at the event.

The workshops cover introduction to basic book-keeping and meeting the needs of the Inland Revenue, end of year accounts, taxation and self-assessment, VAT and PAYE, use of computer spreadsheets and accounts packages.

The cost of the workshop is subsidised and in some cases, can be provided free of charge.
