WORK on a £24,000 Devon County Council initiative to improve a pedestrian route in Tavistock started this week. The county council has agreed with residents in Battery Lane that the route should be recognised as public highway, which the council will maintain in future. Work will now start on a scheme to improve the surface and lighting along this long established pedestrian route between the Crelake area of Tavistock and the town centre and schools. The work, which is being funded from the Devon County Council local transport programme for the West Devon area, was highlighted as a priority in Tavistock Town Council's travel plan and it has been designed in response to community demand. Tavistock county Cllr Roy Connelly said: 'This scheme is warmly welcomed as it has been on the Tavistock community's wish list for some time. I am pleased that we have been able to respond to the needs of the community and that we can provide an improved and safer pedestrian route to the town centre. Hopefully it will encourage more people to walk and lead to a further reduction in car use.'
