A SECTION of the Tavistock to Horrabridge road near Whitchurch will be closed to traffic for five days early next month, to allow remedial work on the controversial 'rural gateway'.
The gateway, constructed earlier this year, was aimed at reducing speed and discouraging heavy vehicles from using the road.
But it has been damaged by people driving over the grass verges and has been criticised by many road users who claim it is inneffective and dangerous.
Now the road will be closed on October 2, for approximately five days, to allow county council highways staff to install granite kerbing and more signing.
At last week's West Devon partnership meeting, Devon County Council's local services officer Mike Parnell said the £10,000 worth remedial works would 'significantly improve' the gateway — the 30mph speed limit will also be extended through the section of road.
During the work access for residents will be maintained 'as much as possible' at either end of the closed section.
