A WOMAN from Yelverton has started a high end job in London, all thanks to her work experience at The Wharf, Tavistock.

Becca Parlby began helping Tavistock resident Dr Ann Pulsford with her Friends of the Wharf Lunchtime Lectures series programme — and on the strength of her work she managed to gain a job in the City of London with public relations firm Lansons.

Chairperson of the Friends of The Wharf Dr Pulsford, who invited Becca to assist in the marketing of the lunchtime lectures, said: 'They were really impressed with her work experience tasks at The Wharf and what she had achieved.'

Becca's role involved anything from basic administration, promoting the lectures using publicity materials, assisting in the organisation of an event and even preparing a lecture for the series.

All tasks were directed towards her aims for her desired future career in public relations.

Becca said: 'Since working at The Wharf and with Ann over the last few months I have been offered a fantastic permanent position with a financial PR agency in London, which looked upon my experience at The Wharf very favourably. In fact they commented at the interview that I had had such fantastic varied work experience!'

She expressed thanks to The Wharf directors Angela and Stephen Court and to Ann.

The first lunchtime lecture at The Wharf in 2015 saw Ann delivering a talk on 'Butterflies, Fleas and Bletchley Park' to an audience of 64. Ann talked about the Rothschild family Miriam Charles and Walter and their contribution to not only the codebreaking work at Bletchley Park in World War Two, but also to natural history, tying two seemingly very different topics together into a fascinating and informative lecture.

Lunchtime lectures are held every Monday at either 2pm or 11am. Cost is £2 for students and £4 for Friends of The Wharf.

The next talk in the series will be Professor Peter Brinsden at 11am on Monday, January 26 at The Wharf and called Admiral Nelson: Hero and Hypochondriac?
