OKEHAMPTON may get a Millennium Wood — if land is made available.
Funds have been offered for the purchase of land on which to create the wood.
The proposal is to put the land forward for the Woodland Trust's Woods on Your Doorstep Project funded by the Millennium Commission using lottery money.
This scheme aims to create 200 new community woods by the year 2000 across England and Wales.
If a site can be be found local residents could help to create a beautiful new native wood open to all for quiet informal recreation that would have lasting environmental and community benefits.
The land should be: available for sale or gift, freehold or very long leasehold; more than one acre (0.4ha) in size; within walking distance of the town; suitable for new woodland creation.
