WEDNESDAY night in future will be Wonga night in Okehampton.

On Wednesday, February 3, the world's first ever Wonga night will be held as part of a fundraising initiative to construct a purpose-built community creche.

The White Hart Hotel in the town's Fore Street is hosting the event which will become a weekly feature.

The Wonga Box is situated in the bar and customers are given the opportunity to purchase a chance by putting a £1 coin in the box.

Their chances are put into a hat and the draw will take place at 8.30pm every Wednesday.

The owner of the winning chance then has to choose one of seven keys.

If the key fits the lock of the Wonga Box then half the money inside goes to the winner and half to the Community Creche Appeal.

Should the wrong key be chosen all the money stays in the box until the next Wednesday when there will just be six keys remaining and lots more Wonga in the Box.

David Mackenzie, of the Ockment Centre, who came up with the original idea, said: 'If at the end of six weeks there is only one key left the winner could walk away with hundreds of pounds.'

Graham Watts, manager at the White Hart, was pleased to be able to help the appeal. He is now hard at work encouraging customer to purchase their chances.

Mandy Kenyon, outreach development officer, said: 'The community creche is a new project for the Okement Centre and fundraising has started from scratch.

'There is a huge demand for affordable child care in Okehampton, especially from parents attending courses at the Ockment Centre so that they return to work.

'As well as the Wonga Box, Mrs Burgess from the Dartmoor Inn has kindly agreed to make a collection for the appeal,' she added.

If you would like to make a donation to the appeal or would like further information call the Ockment Community Centre on 01837 53276.
