WHILST most of the country is enjoying the world cup and flying the flag, there are quite a large number of women who are living in dread. Not because they can?t watch their favourite soap or a good film. For them it means a time of fear and danger. The number of Domestic Violence assaults rises dramatically during the World Cup. It doesn?t help that most places men watch the matches are places that sell alcohol. This can lower inhibitions further and make assaults more serious. However many assaults occur where the perpetrator has not been drinking. Over 10 women are expected to die through Domestic Violence assaults during the World Cup period. The police are so concerned that Sir Trevor MacDonald?s ?Tonight? programme highlighted the problem on Monday. So far England have won their matches but every woman in this situation is terrified that they will lose. For some it doesn?t matter if they win or lose, there will still be an assault. If you are a woman in this situation and would like to talk to someone in confidence please ring South Devon Women?s Aid Helplines on 01837 55228 or 01364 644088.
