POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a 57-year-old woman from Horrabridge was killed last Thursday evening following a traffic accident near her village.

The woman, who was driving a Daihatsu Sirian, was in collision with a Landrover Freelander vehicle being driven by a local man. He was hurt during the collision but his injuries were not life-threatening.

Firefighters from Tavistock and Yelverton attended the collision ? the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. She has been named as Miss Gail Dean.

The accident occurred at about 5.20pm on the unclassified road between Grenofen and Horrabridge, near Sortridge.

The red Daihatsu, a small five-door saloon, was travelling towards Tavistock ? the blue Landrover Freelander estate was being driven in the opposite direction.

Insp Robin Derges, head of the police traffic unit at Plympton, is the senior investigating officer handling the incident.

He said police were treating the collision as ?a most serious matter?.

?Obviously, this is a tragedy and our condolences go out to the family,? said Insp Derges. ?We would like anybody who was driving or riding on that road around that time to contact us.

?Even if they didn?t actually witness anything, I would still like to hear from them, because they may not realise they have information that we need relating to this collision,? he said.

The road was closed to traffic until early next morning while police conducted investigations into the crash.
