NINE Year 6 pupils at Stoke Climsland School have completed a Cyclewise course to improve their basic bike control skills, learn to cycle safely and recognise potential hazards. During their six lessons, the trainee cyclists have mastered stopping and starting safely, left and right turns, as well as overtaking and roundabouts. Volunteer Cyclewise instructor, Richard Smith, the parent of a Stoke Climsland pupil, became involved with the county council-backed scheme in 2005 when he discovered the school?s training programme needed a new instructor. ?I?m keen to get school pupils on their bikes and cycling safely,? said Mr Smith. ?Cycling is not just healthy, it?s fun. ?The Cyclewise course gives pupils and parents confidence and teaches young cyclists the knowledge they need to use the roads safely to get to school, visit friends? houses or go for a day out.? Having completed the course, the pupils will be presented with their certificates in a special assembly at the school.
