A CONTROVERSIAL plan for a nightclub and leisure facility on the outskirts of Tavistock has been withdrawn. Canderbrook Properties Ltd had resubmitted plans for a gymnasium, squash courts and a 500-capacity nightclub at Wilminstone Quarry, following a refusal by West Devon Borough Council?s planning committee in December. Planning officers, who had previously recommended approval for the scheme, had asked for members? views this time, given that the application had not ?materially changed?. They received 62 letters of objection from local residents concerned about traffic, anti-social behaviour and the rural location not being suitable for this development, and some 324 letters of support. The applicants had clarified issues concerning a regular bus service they planned to put in place for nightclub goers which they felt would adequately overcome the concerns of the residents living on Old Exeter Road ? one of the routes back into town from Wilminstone. Tavistock Town Council and the County Highways Authority had opposed the development ? the latter had requested a traffic impact study. Agent for Canderbrook Properties Bob Page said the planning officers did not make a strong enough recommendation this time and so the applicants had decided to proceed with the appeal relating to the former application.
