EVER wondered how many Brussels sprouts you could eat in a minute? Most people can safely say 'no' but this Saturday a man from Bere Alston cannot wait to find out.

At Bere Alston's Victorian Evening this Saturday, Dominic Bourton, 49, will stage a world record attempt to devour the most Brussels sprouts in 60 seconds — the current record is 31!

He will be attempting the record to raise awareness of SKRUM, a charity promoting positive health choices in Swaziland. SKRUM works in schools by providing a comprehensive educational programme of fun and team work through the sport of rugby.

Dominic said: 'I love sprouts and when I saw the record was only 31 I thought "I could match that". However, in training I've found out it's actually a rather hard challenge.'

Each sprout must be picked up with a toothpick and eaten before the next sprout is attempted. Dominic is inviting anyone who would also like to try and break the world record to get in contact.

Dominic's son Hallam, 20, a former Tavistock Rugby Club first team player and a qualified coach and referee, travelled to Swaziland in 2013 to help as a rugby coach for the charity.

SKRUM has its UK registered office based in Tavistock and the town also hosted the Swaziland Olympic Athletics squad in 2012.

Dominic said: 'This small charity does so much good work for the thousands of children it comes into contact with that it deserves more help in raising awareness to the plight of these children.

'With the ties that Tavistock has with this small nation it only seems natural that we use West Devon as the centre for building up this awareness.'
