TAVISTOCK 2nd XV kicked off their season with a comfortable victory at Sandy Park ? out-scoring their visitors by seven tries to two.

The game was played on the recently turned around and much wider pitch which clearly benefited the home side, allowing them to use their incisive backs and mobile forwards to good effect.

The early part of the game started well for Tavistock with the visitors pinned down in their own 22. It was not long though before these large forwards began to tire and after a few threatening moves Tavistock were able to capitalise following a good kick by Ambrose which was collected by Allen on the wing who then fed Woods for an easy run to the line to score under the posts. It was not long before Tavistock scored their second try thanks to good support by Tomkins playing at hooker, later in the half he was to score his second try once more using his deceptive pace to good effect.

In between these two tries by Tomkins, Rich Lloyd, playing in the back row, scored an excellent try.

Late in the half the visitors scored a try with the sides going into the break with the scores at 24-7.

The second half started poorly for Tavi, conceding a try within two minutes of the kick-off.

It was not long before Craig Pascoe, captain for the day scored two tries in quick succession to all but kill off the game following a series of penalties for the home side.

Towards the end of the match Tavistock scored their final try in fortuitous circumstances.

It followed a charge down of a kick under their own posts. Luckily Woods was able to regather the ball and begin a run towards the opposition line, he then passed to Phil Allen who gained more yards and then kicked the ball down the touchline.

It was then kicked on once more for Joe Lane to gather the ball and then dive over the line in the far corner for what turned out to be another excellent try for the home team.

Overall it was an entertaining match which will give the 2nd team much confidence for the challenges which lie ahead, the skill level was encouraging at this early stage of the season and the desire was definitely there.

This game therefore sets the season up nicely with Tavi starting the way they mean to go on.
