What's in a name — to me, a lot.
The naming of a small parcel of land in Tavistock is causing me much heartache. This land situated at the junction of Glanville Road and Butcher Park Hill is owned by Harold Moore and Son (Builders) Ltd and after discussion the firm decided to name it Buddle Meadow. However this was rejected by the local council as being too like Buddle Lane and would cause confusion.
(The fact that, in Tavistock there is Deer Park Lane and Deer Park Crescent, Priory Close and Priory Gardens and many similar seemed irrelevant).
Then my husband died prematurely at 68 and my son and I decided that it would be fitting if we were to name this land as a lasting memorial to my husband and to his father, Mr Moore Snr, who died some years previously.
These two men were the founders of the firm that has traded, and still is trading in Tavistock, for over 50 years, bringing both trade and employment to the town.
We put forward several suggested names, North Moore Meadow being our preferred choice, but this was rejected.
Why should our elected councillors and council officials be able to veto the choice of the owners of the land provided, of course, that the name is not obscene or objectionable!
