AS I go for my morning walk, my delight for the early signs of spring is spoiled by the rubbish strewn in the hedgerows and verges.

Along the main road either side of the Yelverton roundabout are cans, supermarket plastic bags, take-away food containers and much else besides.

It is clear that most of this is thrown from vehicles, some blown from the re-cycling bins at the Leg-of-Mutton. The people who do it do not care and certainly are not going to pick it up. Who is?

Must we wait until we are drowning in rubbish before something is done? At what stage would our councils, county, borough or parish, feel compelled to act?

It seems to me that I am continually being harangued by one body or another about the environment but such a task, which would be to the immediate benefit of us all, and could and should be undertaken by local authorities, is of no interest to them.

Before somebody reading this writes to tell me that, if I feel so strongly about it, why don't I go out and pick it up, have a look yourselves. My guess is that there are two to three lorry loads of it!

PS I have singled out Yelverton, it is not particularly a Yelverton problem, it is a national problem — but we have to start somewhere.
