Devon seconds D (West)

Kingskerswell seconds v Whitchurch seconds

THE Whitchurch second team gets younger and younger by the week, and travelled to Kingskerswell with an U11 and three U13 in the side.

The home side won the toss and elected to bat and Whitchurch thought they were in for a hot and very long afternoon of leather chasing but a superb bowling and fielding effort said otherwise.

The Monger twins patrolled the covers with nothing getting through, backing up tight opening spells from Trembath and Vernon.

Trembath had the ball swinging both ways and trapped Gorley plumb in front for the first breakthrough.

After ten overs Kingskerswell were 25 for 1.

Veteran Tamblin then joined the attack and though the pitch was offering little turn, kept things tight with good variation of pace. Meadows replaced the tiring Trembath, but still Kings found runs hard to come by. Breyley batted stoutly for 39, but as the innings reached the last 15 overs, Kings were well short of any target they may have considered.

Charlie Barriball came on to bowl and kept things tight. As the overs ran out, wickets fell. Tamblin took 2 for 42 off 13, Meadows 2 for 38 off 13 and Trembath 2 for 19 off 11, without doubt his best spell for the club.

Barriball bowled the last over and responded with two wickets, including a stumping from Smerdon, who was excellent behind the stumps. Kingskerswell closed on 149 for 9.

In reply Whitchurch quickly lost Meadows, sharply stumped by Gorley. and then Tamblin edged to slip. Billy Barriball and Matt Ford both scored 25.

However from 64 for 2, the Whitchurch collapse arrived as they slumped to 82 all out.

With such a young side, this was an encouraging performance from the visiting side.
