Devon women's two
Cornwood ladies v Whitchurch ladies
WHITCHURCH Wayfarers Women's Cricket team started the last league game of the season knowing that they had all but won the league. However, the team was determined to keep a 100 record of league wins.
It was a dull, overcast day with rain threatening. Whitchurch lost the toss and were asked to bat.
Captain Cathy Griffin opened the batting and soon brightened up Whitchurch's day. She was strong and powerful, saving her best batting performance for this final game. Her 86no, supported by Ang Hunt (8), Gillian Northey (16) and Ann Ruddock (13) helped Whitchurch build their best total in years of 159-4 after 35 years.
In reply Cornwood made a solid start with L Whitfield and J Horton striking the ball cleanly. Ang Hunt, Cathy Griffin and Ali Moore bowled well, keeping the run rate down and taking a wicket each. However, it was only a matter of time before the rain came down the match was called off as a draw.
The ladies thanked Steve Hodge for umpiring the game and for his coaching the ladies throughout the season.
Whitchurch have been confirmed as league two champions and look forward to next season in division one.
