WHITCHURCH Wayfarers Ladies? cricket team travelled to Exeter Isca on Sunday week.
Exeter won the toss and put Whitchurch in to bat. After losing two early wickets, Gillian Northey and Coraley Medland, Cathy Griffin joined Lesley Smith, and the two Devon players put on a 123 partnership.
Not only was this a superb partnership, it was against the cream of bowling; Jackie Summers, Gemma Jones, Victoria Boomer and Jackie Mills have all bowled for Devon this year and put Exeter Isca at the top of the league.
Lesley Smith (56no) and Cathy Griffin (46no) saw Whitchurch through to 135 for 2 off 35 overs.
Isca opened with Michele Stone, a Devon player, but she met her match when Jo Austin bowled her middle stump for 18, a tremendous scalp for the 17-year-old.
Another youngster, Coraley Medland, came into play and tight bowling earned her figures of 8-2-3-18, the performance of the season.
Two catches for Laura Armstrong, and an overall impressive fielding display, was thwarted by a great innings of 74no by Victoria Boomer who saw Isca through in the 32nd over.
Other bowlers for Whitchurch were Cathy Griffin, Laura Armstrong and Ang Hunt.
Whitchurch have shown how far they have come in recent seasons, and this is well deserved for all their hard work they have put in.
l Cathy Griffin, Lesley Smith and Coraley Medland represented Devon Ladies? cricket team at Instow versus Wales.
Wales scored 175-7, and Cathy had figures of 8-1-9-1, and Coraley bowled 5 overs for 18 runs, but no wickets.
Unfortunately, Devon only scored 100 all out in reply, both Lesley Smith and Cathy Griffin scored 0, and Coraley only 2 runs.
But they gave 100%, and will be in the Devon squad for the rest of the season.
