Whitchurch Wayfarers 2nd XI v Thorverton 2nd X1 WHITCHURCH Wayfarers second continued to put pressure on the top two teams in the C division Devon Cricket League on Saturday with a convincing win against bottom of the league Thorverton. Whitchurch were asked to bat first. With key batsmen missing through summer breaks, in-form second team skipper opened the batting and soon took the visiting team to task, setting Whitchurch off to a good start. Whitchurch did lose one wicket with Ali Falconer departing early on, but this brought young Shaun Daymond to the crease. He and Barriball put on a 117 partnership for the second wicket until Daymond went for 31. Going for quick runs in the last 25 overs, Whitchurch lost two more wickets, but this led to the senior playing member of the club Dean Elliott joining Barriball, who had just reached 100 not out. Dean showed why Devon Over 50s might be calling on him sooner than he thought by taking advantage of poor bowling, and despatched the ball to all parts of the ground to make 59 not out. With Barriball also free hitting his way to 163 not out Whitchurch declared early on 312-4, giving Whitchurch 52 overs to bowl out Thorverton. After tea Whitchurch took to the field with Aaron Churchill, the senior quick bowler, back in the line up after a successful stint in the first team. Wickets were not easy to come by, and the two stubborn opening Thorverton batsmen held their ground. It took Whitchurch?s Neil Tamblin to make the breakthrough. Barriball then brought back opening bowler Daymond who accounted for the second opening bat after a good catch by Andy Alford at gully. Thorverton made it hard again for the Whitchurch attack to break through their middle order line-up. Cue Andy Alford, who quickly got two wickets, including Thorverton?s main batsman, finishing with figures of 5 overs, 3 maidens, 6 runs, 2 wickets. It was game on for Whitchurch and the opening bowling partnership of Daymond and Churchill were brought back into the attack. Churchill went on to take two wickets, with one being taken by the hands of Alford with a great catch to his right close in to the batsman. Daymond went on to make short work of the tail end of the Thorverton batting line-up, finally bowling out the East Devon outfit for 187 all out. Whitchurch are now 27 points behind second placed Bradninch with 60 points to play for going into the last three weeks of the league season.
