Tavistock 2

PGSOB 3

TAVISTOCK men's hockey team have now completed their most successful season, finishing on 43 points, but missing promotion by just two in SW Div 1.

Saturday's match was the first of four end-of-season friendlies. With no league points at stake Tavistock played in a more relaxed style, and promptly conceded two goals in the opening 20 minutes.

Giving 12-year-old Oliver Cowen-d'Arcy his first experience of senior hockey, at centre forward, Tavistock gradually raised the tempo and were rewarded with a goal before half-time, measured reverse-stick shot from Phil Edwards, which surprised the keeper.

Edwards scored his second goal after half-time as a more competitive edge was shown by both sides.

Nicky Bellard was denied a goal by an excellent save as Tavistock gradually took control.

A penalty corner was converted by PGSOBs in the dying minutes, whilst the Tavistock defence were still discussing the decision with the umpire.

Greater concentration will be needed this week, when Tavistock entertain Chudleigh (2.30 Bickleigh).

Team: M Osborne, K Lethbridge, B Cowen, N Aveyard (captain), P Honey, C Jeffery, P Edwards, M Turner, N Andrews, R Bellard, O Cowen-d'Arcy (sub A Roberts-Wray 45 mins).

TAVISTOCK second hockey club were only able to field ten men due to a late cry-off, and of these two were sustaining injury.

The reduced side seemed to make little difference with the defence keeping control of their area. Wills and Thornton had good games at the back.

The hard work of Newman senior in midfield helped frustrate PGSOB attacks and an injured Rowe playing at half his normal pace distributed the ball well to the depleted forwards.

During the second half, Newman junior got in some good crosses and Townsend was unlucky not to score from one.

Tavistock began to tire and Woodward in goal had to made a number of saves with PGSOB finally scoring from a short corner.

This stimulated Tavistock into one last effort and they were rewarded when Ralph's jinking run into the D provided the cross which allowed Glanville to equalise.

Tavistock continued to soak up pressure with Young, making many important tackles to enable them to gain a well earned draw.
