WHAT are the powers that be in Okehampton up to? If I didn't have to come into Okehampton to work and see my kids and grandchildren I wouldn't bother at all. It must rate among the most car owner-unfriendly towns in the country.

What do they hope to accomplish by narrowing the roads, and blocking the left turn into Market Street from West Street? It's crazy, If they are on about the environment, it must be worse to have cars and buses standing in queues at traffic lights pumping out fumes waiting to move, rather than moving freely through town.

Also, by blocking the left turn into Market Street, we have difficulty turning into West Bridge Close when we go to visit the family, and when we do get there our parking is now limited to 30 minutes — no return for one hour. My daughter had to park at Simmons Park, and walk through town with her three-year-old son.

Our view is Okehampton is becoming the pits, and everyone we talk to thinks the same. Tomorrow we are going to Exeter to shop; it's easy to park and free.

There's also a better choice of goods and petrol is about 4p a litre cheaper, making the journey worthwhile. Plus, we get points on our shopping and petrol.

I attended the exhibition of the town plan in the market hall. I didn't hear many, if any, agree with what was proposed, even though I was there for quite a while.
