THREE performances of the community production 'And Some Came Home' took place at Callington Community College last week.

The production was a collaboration between Callington Town Band, the college and the people of Callington and district and was funded by FEAST and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

It told the story of the First World War through the eyes of the soldiers, their families and politicians, with particular emphasis on how it affected Callington people.

Shirley Morse, from the town band, said: 'A cast of almost 70 people gave stirring performances interspersed with the songs of the period and which the audience was encouraged to sing along to.

'The Saturday evening performance was particularly memorable as, with the town band only a few bars in to their first piece, the fire alarm went off! A speedy evacuation ensued and audience and cast members waited outside for the alarm to be turned off. It had apparently been activated by the over-zealous heating of the tea urn. A brief appearance by the fire brigade added to the excitement.'

She said in the cold, but dry, evening air the band and chorus entertained the crowd by playing and singing 'Keep the Home Fires Burning' and 'Pack up Your Troubles' so that by the time it was declared safe to enter the building, everyone was in a happy frame of mind to enjoy the performance.
