ON Sunday May 29, Tavistock's pannier market and concourse, town hall and Bedford Square were packed with the largest-ever town garden festival.

The choice of plants, cut flowers, garden furniture and decorations — from very large wooden swinging sofas to the smallest gnomes — was astonishing.

The town council staff had an onerous task in allocating space and did so splendidly.

People were asking "What does Chelsea Flower Show have that our one lacks?"

Celebrity presenters and guests perhaps, and a somewhat smaller venue is the only possible answer.
