Devon Senior Cup semi final Bere Alston 2 Friary Vaults Mount Gould B 1 BERE Alston started at a frantic pace and for the first 15 minutes pinned the Plymouth based side in their own half. Bere's Blatchford and Westlake caused the visitors all sorts of problems on the wings. Westlake's 25 yard free kick curled into the bottom corner to give the home side a well deserved lead. Within minutes the away side were carved open again; Blatchford's low cross from the right was somehow cleared off the line by some desperate defending from Mount Gould and in the very next attack another fine cross from Blatchford found the head of Truscott, who brought out a fine save from the keeper. The away side started to come more into the game, but for a team who were unbeaten in all competitions this season they played a lot of long balls. These were efficiently dealth with by a Bere Alston back line of Harvey, Howells, Crabb and Piper, who closed down everything that the visiting side's attack had to offer. The home side's Dave Hallett pulled all the strings in the middle of the park and was well supported by Reid and Wheeler. Overall it was a great team effort by the home side in the first half and they deserved their lead at the half time whistle. The second period started a little more even but it was still the home side that were carving out the best chances — Dave Hallett's fierce shot was well saved by the goalkeeper as was the next effort from Wheeler. Despite the Mount Gould's keeper's heroics he could do nothing to stop Wheeler, who for the second week running, unleashed another unstoppable shot from 20 yards, which found the corner to give Bere the cushion of a two goal lead. Midway through the half with 15 minutes remaining the away side gave themselves a lifeline with three players appearing to be clearly offside. The referee waved play on and Fice rounded goalkeeper Howells to make it 2-1. Mount Gould pushed for the equaliser but there was no way back for the visitors and Bere qualified for the next round. On Saturday, January 13, Bere Alston entertain Boscastle in the league, kick off at 2.30 p.m.
