A SURVEY this month by the National Audit Office confirmed that people in West Devon are the most active volunteers in the country.

As an area 36% of those surveyed are involved in volunteering - whereas the average in the rest of the country is around 25%.

West Devon Community and Voluntary Services Volunteer Centre, which has offices in Tavistock and Okehampton, say it will continue to support and encourage people who want to volunteer and keep our community strong.

Billie Burnett, the Voluntary Services co-ordinator for West Devon, said: 'This survey reflects the strength of many of our communities here in West Devon.

'Volunteers are always needed, whatever the economic climate, and there is a wide range of opportunities available for people of all ages and abilities. '

Billie helps volunteers find suitable opportunities and she said she would be delighted to hear from anyone who can give a little time to help sustain 'our own big hearted society.'
