WEST DEN, the West Devon Environmental Network, is a finalist in the Devon Environmental Business Initiative awards.

The Tavistock-based enterprise has been recognised for its work with local schools.

They include Princetown, Milton Abbot, Bridestowe, Lydford and Lifton schools where it has been helping children to understand the importance of biodiversity.

Its approach has been different in each place, depending on the resources available.

In each, however, it has sought to extend the range of plant life, while linking the project to various subjects in the national curriculum.

The schools project has been carried out over the past two years, led by Martin Summers.

West Den, a charity set up in 1994, is one of DEBI's three finalists in the education category.

The results of the competition will be announced on November 23.

DEBI is also a charity, supported by a number of Westcountry businesses such as Sweb and South West Water.
