THE lilac-clad ladies of Okehampton Golf Club have done the town proud with huge success in the county golf finals. On September 25, the ladies' Creasy and President's teams boarded a team coach with caddies and supporters to make their way to the golf finals at Honiton Golf Club. Both teams already had great reason to be proud, with each having won their regional divisions as well as the quarter final and semi-final matches to reach the finals. The Creasy team were first on the tee, spurred on by captain Lorna Evans against the ladies in pink from Sparkwell. After losing the first two matches, the team staged a brave comeback, clinching the vital fourth match to become the 2014 Creasy Champions. Captain Marcia Jones led out the President's team against the Churston ladies. Okehampton took the first match but lost the second, and after a tense finale were crowned victors of the president's trophy. The club made a piece of history with their achievement, as it was the first time that a single club has taken home both trophies. The club's ladies' captain Val Dodsworth recognised the size of their achievement. She said: 'The success of the ladies is a tribute to the remarkable team spirit within the section. We have also received tremendous encouragement from the men, seniors and supporters of the club, which was particularly in evidence on finals day. Our thanks to you all.' Stuart Lord, manager of OCRA, said: 'What a great team picture that encapsulates many of the elements of the joy of sport; friendship, developing skills, doing your best, coming together and representing your club, having fun, testing yourself and in this case winning. 'Well done to both Okehampton ladies teams on your amazing victory at the county finals. Like in so many sports in Okehampton because of its excellent clubs, facilities and coaches structure, this is another great example of a sports club punching well above its weight.'
