THE arrival of the first superfast cabinets for Tavistock to enhance internet connections in the town has been revealed by BT.

The cabinets are part of a BT investment programme in West Devon to bring fibre optic technology to boost connection speed and capability via exchanges in Tavistock, Yelverton and Okehampton.

A superfast cabinet will serve the BT cabinet at Church Lane in Tavistock. Having a separate cabinet speeds up the roll-out as the cabinets are pre-built with their electronic components and are literally dropped in their position.

A further two BT cabinets have also been added to the list as being due to be served by Superfast cabinets, one at the Whitchurch Road junction of Deer Park Lane and one on Plymouth Road outside the bus station.

It is expected that more locations will be named over the coming weeks, although not all BT green cabinets will be connected via fibre optic cable.

West Devon Borough and Tavistock Town Councillor John Sheldon, who has campaigned for better broadband facilities in the area, told the Times: 'I do not foresee any problems with locating these superfast fibre cabinets in the town as the original BT cabinets were located in well-chosen places when first installed. I welcome them.'

'I will continue to work with the chamber of commerce and Tavistock BID to ensure that the business community can increase their opportunity for superfast connection.'
