ON Sunday May 17, the Bere Alston branch of the Royal British Legion will be laying up the present standard at the Holy Trinity Church. A dedication service for the new standard will be conducted by the Rev Nick Law.

The present standard will be paraded through Bere Alston for the last time. The parade will form up at the war memorial at 2.30pm and march to the Holy Trinity Church. The service will commence at 3pm. At the end of the service, the new standard will be paraded back to the war memorial.

The present standard is approximately 20 to 25 years old, so this will be a special event, not only to the branch but to all the people who live on the Bere Peninsula. We will be supported by some of the other Royal british Legion branches in the area. The Devon county president, Rear Admiral R F Cheadle, will be carrying out the exhortation.

Council members and youth organisations have been invited to attend. The Stannary Band will be leading the parade.

The dedication of the new standard has been made possible by kind donations from local people on the Bere Peninsula.

We would like to welcome any ex-servicemen/women to join us on the parade.

The next branch meeting will take place at the Victoria Social Club, Bere Alston, on Monday May 11. The meeting will commence at 8pm. Anyone wishing to join us will be made welcome. Membership is open to any person over the age of 18. It is no longer essential that you need to have served in the armed forces.
