Tavistock Colts 20 Brixham Colts 13 Tavistock Colts played their first home game last Saturday against a strong Brixham side and came out on top. Playing up the slope in the first half Tavistock defended well as Brixham moved the ball wide but failed to make the final pass. After several phases Brixham?s large prop caught Tavistock napping on the blind side and scored in the corner but failed to convert. Tavistock centre Jack Hodges made a great break from his own half supported well by Mark Webber but he got tackled short of the line; other breaks were made from No 8 Jake Chinn. Tavistock still failed to score in this half but were happy to change ends conceding only five points. Tavistock?s front row started to dominate a tiring Brixham scrum and man of the match James Shaw took all his line out ball which gave the backs plenty of ball to attack down the slope. Tavistock?s first try came from a great break by scrum half Ewan Smith who ran between Brixham?s fly half and centre before feeding Mark Webber who scored under the post; it was converted by Andy Smerdon. Brixham fought back and Tavistock had to defend well again to hold them out but some missed tackles let their big centre through to score. Tavistock?s next try came from Andy Smerdon?s break across field after a ruck inside Brixham?s 22 ? the defenders stood like rabbits in a flash light as he darted between them and dotted the ball down, but he failed to convert. Brixham came up the hill again but the young Colts held them off and they only got a penalty for their efforts. Tavistock were also awarded a penalty which Smerdon converted. The final minutes of the game were played in Brixham?s 22 and when they were forced to run out from their own line Webber pounced on a loose ball to score his second.
