THE weather turned on its head in 2008, according to statistics collected by a Tavistock man.

It was the wettest year of the decade so far, with 71.11ins or 1,777 millimetres of rain, according to David Thomas of Violet Lane.

He said the wettest month was July, with 9.89ins or 248ml, while the single wettest day was September 4 with 2.24ins or 55ml. The hottest day was on July 28 at 26.5c or 80f and, remarkably, the coldest night was exceptionally late in the year, April 8 at 4.5c or 24f.

Mr Thomas said: 'We have not had any measurable rain since Tuesday December 16. This is called a blocking high pressure situation when the normal rain-bearing weather systems are diverted away from the UK — that is why it has been so cold lately.'
