APRIL showers? Not last year, this was in fact the driest month of 2007, according to Dave Thomas from Tavistock. Mr Thomas has been collecting daily weather information, ranging from rainfall levels to heat temperatures, in the Tavistock area since he moved to the area in 2000. In April a total of 1.37ins (31mls) of rain was collected — compared with Sunday, September 23, which was the wettest single day of the year, collecting 1.68ins (42mls) of rain. The wettest month was February with 10.18ins (255mls) collected. Between Tuesday, August 21 and Wednesday, September 19 there were only 0.10ins (2.5mls) collected. Mr Thomas said: 'The combined summer months of June, July and August, we had 19.67ins (490mls) which is wet, if this was replicated for the whole year it would amount to 78.68ins (1,960mls). 'To put this into perspective this would still be less than half the annual average rainfall of Ben Nevis.' The coldest night of 2007 was Saturday, November 24 which was 5c (23f) and the hottest day was Saturday, August 25 at 24.5c (76f). Mr Thomas said: 'We have not had one single freezing day — that is when the maximum temperature stays below 0c (32f) for the whole 24 hours.'
