TRIBUTE was paid to Tavistock?s works superintendent last week, following compliments made by the public. Councillors said several comments have been made to them about the state of the parish churchyard, which is maintained by council works staff. Cllr Robin Pike said: ?It?s been looking absolutely spot on this month ? they?ve been doing a really professional job.? Cllr Ted Sherrell said he had asked works superintendent Wayne Southall to look into a problem which had been pointed out to him by a resident in his ward recently. ?Within a week, everything was done. I was most impressed, it was a first class effort ? it?s very reassuring he is so on the ball,? said Cllr Sherrell. The committee was told Mr Southall is currently setting up a recycling system for the town hall, pannier market, cemetery, town council offices and the works department. Cllr Anne Johnson suggested it might be a good idea to carry out a ?waste audit? in tandem with the scheme. ?Waste is an increasingly expensive item ? it may be we should look at the whole area,? she said. ?I just wonder if a waste audit might be a way forward.? Town clerk Roger Howard agreed a list of the current facts and figures regarding waste could be compiled for councillors? information.
