THE fourth round of the Plumb Centre South West Winter Foursomes was held on Sunday, along with the plate qualifying round; a strong wind made conditions difficult, but the better players were able to cope with the conditions.

The biggest shock was the reigning champions going out of the competition. Adam Bridgewater and Joe Yorke were beaten 3 and 2 by Wayne Tulley (Elfordleigh) and Colin Gentry (Tavistock). Tulley and Gentry's short game was sharper than their opponents with the home pair missing a few short putts.

Tim Aggett and Rob Sandford continued their relentless progress through the field; being five up after 12 holes, their opponents Chris Chapman and Jamie Shobrook came back at them, so they were only 2 down with 3 to play, but Aggett and Sandford held on to win 2 and 1.

Jane Wright (Staddon) and Bev Ruth (Tavistock) played well; Bev putting particularly well sinking a good putt to win the ninth and Jane hitting a remarkable chip from a bush on the 15th to a foot to win the hole.

Tracey Loveys and Amy McSweeeny (Bigbury) lost in the closest of matches; there was never anything between them and their opponents Iain Parker and Jamie Mullen (RND). The match was decided on the 18th hole when the RND pair managed a bogey five into a severe head-wind to win the match.

In an all-Yelverton match George Frude and Chris Gunn beat Bryan Blaber and Mike Ayres 4 and 3, when both sides struggled with the conditions. In the other all-Yelverton match David Coombs and Colin Nolan defeated Neil Sellick and Paul Hendy 2 and 1. The last match out saw Libbaton professional David Jeffs, partnered by his mother Margaret, take on local pair Tim Shobrook and John Chapman and it was only decided on the final hole, with the Jeffs coming out on top. It leaves professionals David and Iain Parker to play for the £1,000 Professionals' prize in the New Year.

The Plate competition was a foursomes Medal competition, with the top eight scores to qualify. The best score was from two Yelverton youths, James Holt and Anthony Bradley, both playing off a 3 handicap, who scored a creditable net 75. The plate competition will then play in a match play format, in line with the main competition, with the finals in February 2009.
