SHORTS and suntan cream were needed for sailors taking part in the Goodacre Cup Series at Roadford.
There were three races, two were before lunch back-to-back with a longer one in the afternoon. James Platts was officer of the day with Julie assisting.
Race one was sailed in light breezes over a short triangular course, with three triangles and a sausage to finish. Confusion reigned with everyone going in circles and losing count of how many triangles had been completed! After handicap: 1 Kevin Boyd and Sonia Calloway in their Wayfarer Vola Vola, 2 Mike Kinger and Nicky Buckett in Wayfarer Haze, 3 Mike and Martin Harries in a Lark.
The second race was a standard triangle, sausage, triangle set with a good tactical beat to the buoy in Wortha inlet. The start was tight with all boats starting in a bunch at one end of the line followed by lots of calling 'Starboard' to indicate their right of way, as boats tacked up the water trying to get an advantage and clean air.
The lead changed several times, the wind being variable dying away completely in parts of the lake leaving boats drifting while others sailed merrily along.
Result: 1 Robin Burnham and his crew in their Flying Fifteen, 2 Alistair Wallace and Dick Seeley in their Wayfarer, 3 Mike Kinger and Nicky Buckett in another Wayfarer.
The third race was round the set marks of the lake in a large figure of eight. The wind picked up for the start but just as boats were on the final leg of the race it died. Boats were surprisingly close at the finish with everyone trying to catch the smallest puff of wind and keep ahead. 1 Roger Ford and Val Shillito in their Wayfarer, 2 Burnham and crew in the Flying Fifteen, 3 Boyd and Calloway in a Wayfarer.
Thanks were expressed for the extra support from Bristol and Avon who were down for a camping weekend.
The overall results of the series for the Goodacre Cup were 1 Boyd and Calloway in the Wayfarer, 2 Kinger and Buckett in another Wayfarer, 3 Burnham and crew in the Flying Fifteen.
