BANNERS are better than canvas signs held up with blue rope ? that is the claim of a number of town councillors.
Cllr Norma Woodcock, along with other members of the finances and general purposes committee last week, was unhappy that an application by Tavistock Methodist Church for three banner signs had been refused.
?Banners would be preferable to the present situation in Tavistock where we have canvas across Court Gate and the town hall held up with blue rope,? she said.
?I cannot believe there isn?t a better and more formal way of advertising these events that are better for this town.?
Cllr Woodcock suggested that two vertical banners would look attractive. While she accepted no-one wanted Tavistock to resemble Blackpool, such forms of advertising could look very pleasing.
Cllr Iain Andrews agreed that the ?lashings of blue nylon rope? did not look good against the town hall, which was being developed as an image that should reflect well on the town.
Cllr Jane Ramsey felt vertical banners were ?most attractive? and had the advantage of not flapping in the wind. Although no one knew of banners that were easily changeable when it came to advertising messages she pointed out that Plymouth changed its on a regular basis.
The idea of making representations as to whether such items could be implemented was put forward by Cllr Roy Connelly.
It was agreed to pursue the matter further.
