THE story on page 4 of the issue of July 7, MoD opposition to wind farm, makes interest reading, for I was at the West Devon Borough Council planning meeting on different business, but listened to the debate, at which the application was refused. After the meeting I asked a parish councillor if the objectors had thought of contacting the MoD (RAF) for I was under the impression that the location was in or close to a low-flying area. I explained that our daughter who lives between York and Selby was faced with the prospect of substantial pylons almost in her ?back yard?, and whilst a case against them was almost finalised, the MoD also stepped in with an objection and the plans were seemingly withdrawn. In the case of Yelland Farm, the MoD seems to have made a contribution to the debate when it might have been too late, whereas it did get its act together a little more effectively, or so it seems, in Yorkshire. Perhaps the MoD will explain the perceived tardiness of their action, and perhaps we could all be told how it should or would have been alerted to such a proposal. I am strongly in favour of the creation of renewable energy, and I would have thought that West Devon is an ideal area in which greater use of water generated power could be made. We have a nucleus of systems, two of which are of historical significance, and more are coming on stream (!) but is this not an area where South West Water and its parent might make us more aware of their achievements so far, and their plans, hopefully positive, for the future. Only recently, if not now, the Tavistock Canal that feeds the Morwellham hydro scheme, appeared to be in the ownership of National Power, whereas I thought that the system had been transferred to SWW!
