APRIL 2013 sees the launch of Healthwatch Devon, the new independent consumer watchdog for health and social care services. It is being introduced as part of the national changes to the health and social care system that came into effect from April 1.

Healthwatch Devon aims to give power to local people's voices to influence the delivery and design of local services. Healthwatch Devon will help provide information about care choices and assist people with navigating the increasingly complex health and social care system.

Dawn Eckhart, project manager for Healthwatch Devon said, 'Healthwatch Devon is all about giving people a stronger say in helping to drive improvements in health and social care services. Services should be and will be based upon people's needs and experiences, and accountable to local people. This is a real opportunity for the people of Devon to have their say on services in their area: we want to hear from you about your experience of services — the good, the bad, and the ugly!'

The Community Council of Devon will work in partnership with the board of Healthwatch Devon to develop an independent, sustainable, community owned organisation able to be a powerful voice for the people for Devon. Members of the public, users of health and social care services and carers will all be welcome to become members of Healthwatch Devon.

Volunteers will play a crucial role in helping to ensure Healthwatch Devon can raise the profile of issues.  people.
