VOLUNTEERS from Tavistock Taskforce who can often be seen litter picking around the old airfield site at Yelverton recently undertook a different challenge.

The small body of workers spend hours trudging the area collecting discarded rubbish, but during July the group of volunteers along with the help of Knightstone/RAF Harrowbeer Archives took on the task of clearing the former site of the drying rooms and flight offices, situated between Crapstone Road and the old perimeter track.

The buildings would have been used by No 193 Squadron, in particular during 1943 and early 1944, but were demolished in the late 1940s, leaving only the bases as a reminder.

Michael Hayes, from Harrowbeer Interest Group, said: Over the past 60 years the amount of detritus has built up on these bases, making them almost unrecognisable.

Thanks to the hard work of Peter ODell and his team of volunteers this flight office base is once again visible and is a reminder of where countless numbers of airmen would have worked and operated from.
