RESIDENTS are being warned against giving bank details over the telephone to callers claiming to be from BT. A local woman received a call recently from a man with an Indian accent who said he could offer her a special deal regarding BT?s friends and family service. He then asked for her personal details, including her date of birth, before requesting her bank details. When the woman refused to give her bank sort code she was immediately put onto the caller?s ?supervisor? who continued to pressurise her into giving them the information. The woman also believes the same people have telephoned her 83-year-old mother three times and may be targeting the elderly. A spokesman for BT said they would rarely ask for bank details over the telephone and advised customers not to give out information unless they are absolutely sure who is on the end of the line. A genuine BT operator will be able to give a contact number for the customer to call to verify their identity.
