AN initiative aimed at encouraging people to walk more often is being developed in Tavistock — and organisers want residents input into the scheme.

Stepping Out in Tavistock is a programme to encourage people of all ages to take up walking as a way of improving their health and meeting new people.

Ruth Thorne, sports development officer for West Devon Borough Council, said: 'Walking is an ideal way to introduce people to physical activity.

'This project is an excellent opportunity for people to take advantage of their surroundings and improve their health at the same time.'

The project will be co-ordinated by South Hams and West Devon Primary Care Trust, the borough council and South Hams District Council, with help and input of as many local volunteers as possible.

Caroline Mather, research assistant, said there will be a central group responsible for designing and promoting a series of walks in Tavistock, which will also be included in an information pack. Volunteers may also be trained as walk leaders if they wish.

'What we need for the project to move forward is an indication of local interest and support,' said Caroline, who urged anyone who has comments, ideas or who would like to more to contact her on 01752 308328 (evenings).
