A GROUP of friends who provide support to the Teenage Cancer Trust recently celebrated ten years of fundraising for the charity. Instigated by Ruth Harris, friends and interested walkers join the walks which take place every Friday morning, and pay £3. The idea for the walks started in 2004 when Ruth was left some inheritance money. She decided to donate an amount of the money to the Teenage Cancer Trust and took part in a charity trek. 'There's no particular reason why I chose the Teenage Cancer Trust but I wanted to do something for charity and I liked the sound of the Trust and it stuck in my head,' said Ruth. 'I love walking so it was an easy way of raising money and I have met some amazing people through doing it.' The walks last for two to three hours and the group varies each week, depending on who wants to participate that week. Over the ten years, Ruth estimates that they have raised between £20,000 and £25,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust — the only charity that provides specialist care and support for young people with cancer. Ruth also organises a larger event, the Annual Dartmoor Walk, which has grown in popularity. She is now looking for someone, or a group of people, to take over the responsibility for this ten-mile walk as she cannot dedicate enough time to its organisation. The next Annual Dartmoor Walk will take place on September 14. Anyone interested in the smaller walks or taking over the annual Dartmoor walk can contact Ruth at [email protected]">[email protected]
