A NINE-year-old from Whitchurch raised £800 for a local residential care home by walking 83,000 steps across Dartmoor over ten days in memory of his Granny.

Luke Sanders wanted to raise money for all the wonderful people who work at Spring House Care Home in Peter Tavy as a way of thanking them for the wonderful care they gave his Granny Jenny Sanders, who sadly passed away on May 4.

He said: ‘I just want to make sure they get the rest and enjoyment that they so badly need.’

He walked 83,000 steps over Dartmoor — linked to 83, his Granny’s age when she died and her love of Dartmoor. The funeral procession left Peter Tavy village with a large number of villagers coming out to watch it leave, including all the workers at Spring House.

Nora Sanders, Luke’s Mum and Jenny’s daughter-in-law, said: ‘We are so proud of Luke and very grateful to everyone who so generously supported him. In these extraordinary times, the carers at Spring House really did go above and beyond to care for Luke’s Granny and this is a lovely way to show the whole family’s appreciation.’
