A TAVISTOCK school is one of four finalists whose musical creation could soon be heard across the county as Devon's anthem.

Whitchurch Primary School has been chosen by a panel of judges as the winner of the category 'song for a primary school'.

Now the four finalists' songs will be put to the public vote, with one overall winner of the competition announced next month.

The county-wide Song4Devon competition was launched earlier this year by Devon County Council, to find a memorable and catchy song to celebrate Devon's unique character.

The school's song is called D-E-V-O-N and is sung by 21 school pupils from years 5 and 6. The catchy song was written by the school's music co-ordinator Karon Higginson after she saw the competition advertised by Devon County Council.

Mrs Higginson said: 'I write songs at the school to help children learn and after I saw the advert saying they wanted a song for Devon, I wrote one and asked the children to sing it.

'They seemed to like it so I wrote out the words and asked the children to sing it again while I recorded it — and sent it off to Devon County Council.

'They wanted a song which represents Devon so when I wrote it, I thought of things which everyone associates with the area.

'I tried to put as much of Devon as I could into the song. I am pleased we have got this far and it is nice that little old Tavistock got chosen.'

Devon County Council's deputy leader John Smith said: 'The standard was really high, and what came across was all the entrants' passion for music and for their county.

'We now have four excellent finalists and would urge everyone to listen to their songs and place their votes.'

The songs can be heard on the council's website — http://www.devon.gov.uk">www.devon.gov.uk — from December 1, and listeners to BBC Radio Devon will be able to hear the songs on the Breakfast Show the week commencing Monday, December 8.

People will be able to vote for their favourite song either by text or via the council's website.

The winner will be announced on Monday, December 15 on Matt Woodley's BBC Radio Devon Breakfast Show.

The overall winner will receive £2,000 worth of vouchers to spend at Project Music, an Exeter music shop and sponsors of the competition, with the three runners-up each receiving £500 of vouchers.
