WITH a major repair programme starting next month, volunteers with an interest in architecture are being sought at Castle Drogo to carry out guided tours. The long-term repair project has presented an opportunity for volunteers with a passion for buildings to talk to visitors about what is happening. The National Trust, which owns the property, has been awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund which will enable the building of a replica builders? hut to house some innovative displays about the work going on. Volunteers are being sought for vacancies across the property ? helping in the garden, shop and plant centre, assisting with events and education programmes, working with the wardens out on the estate or getting involved in visitor welcome, research or conservation in the house. There are options for work placements or for students on gap years to get involved, develop their skills and gain experience for the world of work. The team at Drogo can also give advice about pursuing a career with the National Trust in full or part-time work. Property manager Mark Agnew said: ?Over 50 per cent of the hours worked at Castle Drogo are worked by volunteers. ?Without our volunteers we would not be able to open to the public or continue with the high standards of care in the castle, estate and grounds. ?Giving us the gift of some of your time makes all the difference in allowing us to preserve Castle Drogo for everyone.?
