A SUCCESSFUL summer flower show at Meavy on Saturday August 9 had visitors enjoying the colours and fragrance of an increased number of entries.

Sixteen classes ranged from the many colours of hydrangeas, via an assortment of cut flowering shrubs, to plants for foliage, large and miniature flower arrangements or a plant in a small pot.

The vegetable, salad vegetable, and herbs classes saw stiff competition with all three winners repeating last year's success: while Sam Williams, aged 12, earned a highly commended award for his entry .

Chairman Joyce Williams thanked show secretary Brenda Burt for her smooth organisation of the day. Also the ladies of Meavy Garden Society for providing cakes and refreshments; Doris Potter for conducting the raffle, only possible due to the members' generosity in providing prizes, all the helpers who put up and stripped down the staging for exhibits. and the increased number of members for entering high quality exhibits after a wet summer.

President Cyril Sparey, assisted by Douglas Henderson, held a successful plant sale on Meavy Green; beneath a gazebo erected to the instructions of young Sam Williams. Despite the wet conditions they made a significant contribution to the day's takings.

West Devon Cllr Dianna Moyse praised the organisation that produced such a colourful show.

Visitors are expected to bring their brains to Meavy shows as they have to select their own personal choice of the best exhibit in each class; and special thanks were expressed to Tim Lambie, for collating these votes on a laptop. His computer help business chezvouspc.com is based in the village.

Members are car sharing for a visit to Ken-Caro near Liskeard on Saturday September 6, to explore the garden. And on Monday September 15 David Squire, RHS Rosemoor supervisor, will be advising on 'Growing Ornamental Grasses' starting at 7.30pm in Meavy Parish Hall. Visitors are always welcome — call 01822 853255 for details.
